Tutorial: Making a Simple Beaded Necklace

I thought I would make one of my first tutorial efforts on beading something simple.  And there isn’t nothing more simple than a strung necklace.

First you need to gather your materials! Fun!

Sparkle & Doom DesignsYou need a choose a focal bead.  You can buy beads from craft stores, and you usually get at least 4 on a strand or card.

Ebay is a good source for gemstone beads.  Thrift stores for broken jewelry & abandoned stashes.  Don’t forget the teen jewelry stores like Claires where you can find bracelets, earrings, and necklaces on sale.  You can take those apart for the interesting components as well.  Or maybe you have a broken piece in your own collection and want to reuse it.  Keep the memories and save space in your jewelry box.  Above I have gemstone strands from thrift stores, craft stores, and Ebay.  Broken jewelry, and pieces purchased on sale from Claires.

Old chandelier crystals,  and thrift store beads.

Next you figure out what seed beads go best with your focal.  Do you want a complicated pattern, a simple repeating pattern, one colour.  Don’t be afraid of mixing finishes of seed beads.  To the left you can see I paired an opaque lime green with yellow lined green, and a cut grass green seed bead.

If cost is an issue, or you feel like you won’t be beading to often, then why not split your purchases with a friend or two?  You can get a huge variety for the same amount of money if you all chip in and split the loot at home.  {One of these days I should host a beading party!}

You can make your necklace as flashy as you want or as quiet and subdued.  Both are good for different focal beads.

To make the silver metallic shard necklace masculine I left the seed bead choice plain, a black colour lined bead.

Next, thread and needle.  Beading thread in black or white, and a size 12 needle.  Collettes, jump rings, and closures.

Jump rings & closures come in different metal colours & finishes.  It’s nice to match your focal bead with the closure finish.  I haven’t found collettes in anything but silver or gold tones.

There are toggle clasps, spring clasps, lobster clasps, and barrel clasps.  :)

Once you get your clasps figured out, you’re ready to start.

Thread your needle onto your thread colour of choice, and pull 4 times your planned necklace length plus about 2 feet.  String on one seed bead, and then thread the other end of the thread through the needle so that the ends are on the same side of the eye.

Sparkle & Doom DesignsThis is a good time to wax your thread.  I use an old candle. :)

Just hold the thread down with your thumb and pull the thread over the edge of the candle once or twice.

Waxing the thread helps to stop the thread from tangling.

Sparkle & Doom DesignsThread on a collette.  This is a handy finding {what we beaders call the less interesting but neccessary bits of jewelry} that connects the beaded part to the closures.  I recommend using them because findings do break, and you can switch them out easier this way.

Sparkle & Doom DesignsYou want to pull your thread all the way through the collette, until it catches on the seed bead you captured between the two threads.

Now you’re ready to string on you’re seed beads.  There are a lot of patterns you can do.

You want to string on half your desired length then your focal bead and then the other half.

Then you string on the second collette, then a seed bead.  Go back through the collette and some beads on the string and tighten the thread.

You go back through all the beads strung, right back to the very first seed bead you strung.  That would be the seed bead you strung on the other side of the collette.  Tie a knot around it and go back through the last {first!} seed beads.  Now your ready to cut the thread!

Sparkle & Doom Designs

There are several ways to add a focal bead.  Just going through the bead {silver crystal}, using a jump ring {heart, enameled leaf}, or the following method.

Sparkle & Doom DesignsAs you can see the orientation of the bead lends itself to be strung hanging down, not sideways.  A simple problem to solve. Go down the bead, string several stop beads, and go back up the focal bead without going through the stop beads.  The agate bead I used had a very large hole, so I used a couple of black size 8 beads {won’t go through the hole} to string it on.

another tool you will need is a pair of jewelry pliers, or at least it makes things easier. :)

Using the jewelry pliers, close the collette around the seed bead.  Add the findings to the collette and close it.  And that’s it!!!
